Subjects and units

Delivered both on campus and online, the Master of International Hotel Management comprises of 11 core subjects, one elective, and two compulsory industry placement subjects. Each subject requires 10 hours of study per week: three hours facilitated and seven self-directed. Assignments may include activity-based tasks or online quizzes, with no formal exams.

In this subject, you will critically examine and apply key guest experience concepts in the design and management of hotel guest experiences. You will be introduced to the fundamental concepts associated with tourism, hospitality and hotel services. Learn about guest experience theories, and how to stage, manage and co-create experiences that elicit emotional responses, leave lasting impressions and ensure business success.

This subject will introduce you to the skills and knowledge required for effective food and beverage (F&B) management. With a focus on the hotel industry, it has both a theoretical and practical component. You will gain an insight into the range and scope of F&B establishments, and the trends which are impacting these operations on a local and global scale. In the practical component, you will gain working knowledge of the roles and management functions required to operate successful hotel F&B outlets. With a balance of theoretical elements, applied training, and immersive learning opportunities, you will be equipped with the essential skills and knowledge to lead a successful F&B operation.

This subject focuses on front office and housekeeping as critical functions of rooms division in hotels by analysing theory and practical components pertaining to delivering quality guest experiences. You will learn these fundamental practical skills, combined with theoretical knowledge, that will prepare you to manage and lead teams in rooms division.

Industry placement is a critical component of the Master's program; it is designed to expose you to your chosen position in the international hotel/hospitality industry. Begin your two-subject journey in Industry Placement by obtaining employment. In this subject you will reflect on the process of securing your position, conduct an analysis of industry employability trends and finally, highlight your employability skills through the lens of employability diagnostic activities.

Business Research for Hoteliers will familiarise you with the advanced skills and knowledge required for completing industry-relevant research projects and for making high quality business decisions. Specific attention is given to the process of evaluating research knowledge and skills. You will then undertake planning, designing and articulating a research proposal according to ethical principles that will provide the framework for your IAP607BM project. The combination of BRH606BM and IAP607BM enables you to develop a comprehensive understanding as to how research concepts relate to and supports the successful completion of the IAP607BM project.

This subject provides you with an overview of the current, emerging and disruptive technologies that are changing the hotel industry – from the way we design products and experiences to how we engage guests. In this capstone subject, and as a continuation of BRH606BM Business Research for Hoteliers, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate core competencies of written and verbal communication, information literacy, synthesis of complex information, and critical thinking. As an independent researcher, you will achieve this by completing a substantive industry-relevant research project by applying business research methods in a collaborative team environment. This research project will be implemented based on experiential learning targeting an actual business situation and/or contemporary topic that has significance to hotel industry.

Strategy is required when a business defines goals and sets objectives in order to meet stakeholder expectations to create competitive advantage. Business events are a significant source of revenue for the global hotel industry. In this subject you will explore the different types of events within the MICE industry (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) and the role of key stakeholders in facilitating successful execution. Macro environmental factors and their impacts on events and host locations will also be examined. You will investigate how hotels optimise their resources to secure event clients and raise additional revenue. Finally, you will review how event concept plans are devised, ensuring they meet the clients’ requirements and tailored to a specific hotel.

Sustainability and the Environment | STE610BM

Environmental Sustainability involves making decisions and taking action in the interest of protecting the natural world with particular emphasis on building organisational capability, practices and processes. Students will be introduced to the impacts that hotels have on our natural environments and be encouraged to explore strategies hotels can develop to be more sustainable.

Hoteliers and Global Tourism | HGT611BM

The aim of this subject is to critically examine the relationship between the hotel sector and the broader tourism industry which is one of the largest in the world. The subject builds on contemporary events and literature, with a particular focus on social, political, economic and environmental issues. Students will critically reflect on stakeholder involvement across sectors.

International students must not enrol in more than one-third (33%) of online subjects over their course, and must study at least one face-to-face subject each study period. For more information, visit Study in Australia.

What are Torrens University Australia’s ATAR requirements for domestic students?

Torrens University Australia no longer considers ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) as our primary entry requirement. We have removed ATAR as the key admissions criteria for applicants aiming to study at Torrens University Australia. We strongly believed an alternative to the ATAR system should be found, which more broadly assesses students, especially when soft skills are emerging as important employability attributes. So, students with a recent secondary school education are now considered for admission if they have a Year 12 (Australian secondary school) certificate. Exceptions may apply to some courses.
What if  I don’t meet the entry criteria for a degree?

Torrens University Australia has a range of application pathways to help you gain entry into our degrees based on different criteria.

Am I eligible for FEE-HELP?
If you are a domestic student attending university or an approved higher education provider, you can get a FEE-HELP loan to pay all or part of your tuition fees.

You are eligible for FEE-HELP assistance for a unit of study (i.e. subject) if you:

Undertake study with an approved provider.

Meet the citizenship and residency requirements:

An Australian citizen or a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder who meets the long-term residency criteria and who will undertake, in Australia, at least one unit of study contributing to your course; OR

A permanent humanitarian visa holder who will be a resident in Australia for the duration of your unit; OR

Are a permanent visa holder who is undertaking bridging study for overseas-trained professionals, and will be a resident in Australia for the duration of the study.

Enrolled in an eligible unit of study by the census date for the unit.

Can I get course credit for previous experience?

Yes, course credit is available for most courses upon application and academic approval (excluding Higher Degree by Research programs). 

If you have already completed a qualification or have relevant work experience, you may be eligible for credit towards your course. What are Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT)? How do I apply?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that recognises experience, previous study and qualifications, and other forms of informal and non-formal learning, to determine if you meet course requirements.

If you have relevant qualifications or experience, you may be eligible for credit towards your course and a reduction in tuition costs.
